Health coaching is a relatively new profession in South Africa. It is a method of guiding others to address their health and, if need be, make behavioural changes to improve health. Like traditional coaching, health coaches utilize goal setting, identification of obstacles, and use of personal support systems. The relationship between the coach and coachee is an accountability partnership focused on the overall health outcome goals as defined by healthcare practitioners and the patient/coachee.

Unlike a life coach who deals with a client on a broad basis, a health coach is more specialised and is more likely to be qualifications in various aspects of health. The focus is on providing the client with holistic wellness solutions that are tailor-made for the specific individual. Various aspects that may need to be addressed are things like stress management, weight management, nutrition and lifestyle changes. It differs from therapy in that the focus is more on the present and future than the past, more on goals and behaviours than emotions and emotional patterns, and there is a more equal balance of power between the coach and client than between the typical therapist and client.
